...New 18Z Aviation Discussion...

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Friday)
Issued at 346 AM EDT Thu Aug 14 2025

Key Messages:

    - Coverage of showers and thunderstorms will trend toward the
isolated to scattered variety more typical of August today
      and Friday.

    - Temperatures will trend upward with heat index values again
exceeding 100 degrees for many areas, especially on Friday.

Showers and a couple isolated thunderstorms linger this morning,
mainly in eastern and portions of Middle Georgia, associated with a
weak disturbance/MCV weakly spinning eastward across east central
Georgia. Coverage of these showers will continue to slowly diminish
through sunrise, leading into a considerably drier Thursday on tap
across the area. This drier turn comes as midlevel flow becomes more
west to northwest today, ushering in some subsidence. Still, it is
August and the overall airmass does not change with plenty of
moisture remaining in place, so at least a few isolated showers and
thunderstorms can be expected during the afternoon and early
evening. Given less rainfall coverage, temperatures will continue
their upward creep today, reaching the low 90s for most.

Upper riding over the Gulf coast will continue strengthening and
building westward through Friday. As a result, highs in the low to
mid 90s combined with 70s dewpoints will lead to afternoon heat
index values once again reaching 100-104 for many areas Friday
afternoon. Some areas in central/east central Georgia could again
begin to nudge toward Heat Advisory criteria with at least isolated
105 heat index values becoming more probable Friday afternoon. With
the area remaining on the periphery of the ridge, scattered diurnal
convection can be expected Friday afternoon and evening. Given ample
instability, a few storms could produce locally strong downburst
winds and locally heavy rainfall before diminishing with the loss of
daytime heating.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 346 AM EDT Thu Aug 14 2025

Key Messages:

    - Daily afternoon/evening thunderstorm chances through next week
      (mainly diurnally driven).

    - Temps rising to above normal into next week with highs the
      upper 80s to low 90s.

Discussion:

Mid-level ridging will be the main flow pattern through the long
term into the weekend and early next week as we see the trough north
of the area continue pushing into the NE and the ridging push
further into the gulf. Meanwhile at the surface a weaker flow
pattern through the end of the week into early next. SW flow should
turn more westerly as the area is between the quasi-zonal flow to
the north and the ridging to the south into the weekend. Rain
chances begin to decrease into the weekend at ~30% as much of the
southeast is under the influence of ridging aloft and high pressure
at the surface. With a potential troughing/weak low pressure center
off the Carolina coast Saturday into Sunday this may be enough
moisture to allow for more scattered diurnally driven showers and
thunderstorms instead of just isolated. Temps will also begin rising
into the weekend with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s which is
around 4-5 degrees above normal for some areas. As you push into
early next week high temps push into the mid 90s for much of the
area with heat index values in the 100-104 range but likely stay
just out of criteria as the ridge and high pressure fully builds in
over much of the southeastern CONUS. A positive of this ridging is
that when TC Erin pushes westward into Tuesday and Wednesday and
begins to approach our area this should aid in the re-curve that is
showing up on both the GFS and ECMWF ensembles. The cold front
approaching the area from the north will also aid in pushing Erin
away from north and central Georgia. At this time not expecting any
impacts to north and central Georgia as a result.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 135 PM EDT Thu Aug 14 2025

Isolated showers and storms will be possible through 03Z Friday.
Impacts at the TAF sites are unlikely. Additional isolated
thunderstorm activity is expected between 18Z Friday and 03Z
Saturday. Patchy fog and low ceilings (200-1500 ft AGL) are
possible between 09Z and 14Z Friday. Again, the likelihood of
these conditions at the TAF sites is low. Winds will continue to
be from the northwest (300 to 360 degrees) through Friday at
speeds of 2 to 8 kt.

//ATL Confidence...18Z Update...
High confidence in the wind forecast through Friday.
Low confidence in storms before 02Z Friday and between 18Z Friday
and 03Z Saturday.
Low confidence in low ceilings or fog between 10Z and 14Z Friday.
